Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement office which currently employs 12 full time and 6 part-time sworn law enforcement personnel. This includes one School Resource Officer serving both Thomas Hunter Middle School and Mathews High School.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff. This position requires certification as a Basic Law Enforcement Officer through the Department of Criminal Justice Services in Virginia. 

Applicants should have the ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques related to law enforcement and it’s required responsibilities. This position requires the ability to work assigned shifts to include weekends and holidays and subject to emergency call-outs and court appearances. Deputy Sheriffs are charged with enforcement of State and Local criminal and traffic laws and ordinances.

Applicant Requirements

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Comprehensive back-ground investigation
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Pre-employment physical examination
  • Successfully pass a polygraph examination
  • U.S. citizen
