Mission
The mission of the Mathews County Building Department is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public by ensuring the requirements of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (Virginia USBC) are met.
This includes accepting permit applications, reviewing construction documents and plans, issuing permits and performing inspections.
Building Code
The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code regulates new construction, alteration, rehab, renovation, and movement of buildings, accessory structures and equipment to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the general public.
Floodplain Management
In addition, the Mathews County Building Department administers the Mathews County Floodplain Management Ordinance and maintains the county floodplain maps (FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps).
